NORFOLK, Neb. (KTIV) - Changes are on the horizon for some major roads in Norfolk, Nebraska.

The First Street bridge that goes over the Elkhorn River will be replaced. The city will also be adding a roundabout at the intersection of First Street and Braasch Avenue.

City officials said these are tied together as part of the Johnson Park and First Street Improvement Project. A new walkway will also be installed under the bridge.

Officials said this will provide easier access for people using the river for kayaking, and other activities.

"It's an investment that we're making as a community into these areas. We're very confident that once these are in place, we're going to see payback with economic development opportunities over in that area," said Steven Rames, public works director and engineer for the City of Norfolk.

Rames said the bridge project is slated to begin in January 2022 while the Roundabout project is slated to start in April 2022. He said both projects should be done by Summer 2022.
