SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Early Thursday morning, ground was broken at the future site of Woodbury County's new jail.
Contractors are moving over 10,000 yards of dirt per day in preparation for construction work for the jail. the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Authority hoes to begin construction by Aug. 1.
When the 122,000 square foot jail is completed, it will house four courtrooms, the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office and possibly the county attorney's office as well.
The jail is expected to house around 450 inmates once completed.
Ron Wieck with the Law Enforcement Authority said while they hope the bid for construction stays local, but they have to abide by the law.
"Yes, we by law have to go with the low bid and that is the process we're taking," said Wieck.
The site of the new center will be located at 3701 28th Street.
