STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) - A therapy dog is playing a major role in children's education at a Storm Lake, Iowa middle school.
Dory, a goldendoodle, is Storm Lake Middle School's therapy dog.
School leaders say she helps promote greater self-esteem, and focused interaction. There are also emotional and mental health benefits for the students as well.
"We all have rough days, sometimes I don't want to get out of bed and I don't want to go to work, and some of our kids don't have the language and the maturity to talk about that are sociably acceptable, sometimes Dory can swoop right in, and the kids just magically change their tune," said Stacey Cole, superintendent of Storm Lake Community School District.
Dory was trained, and certified, to be a therapy dog. Right now, the district has three therapy dogs.
